I have a funny story to tell you. At the old-enough-to-know-better age of 43, I have sustained a running injury. Actually, that’s not the funny bit. The funny part is that I have started running. Continue reading “Running not walking”
Ah, English Summer Fetes. What a beautifully eclectic variety of weekend entertainment. From the gently frustrating Hook-a-Duck, the aggression venting Splat-the-Rat, the pocket fleecing raffle (none of the prizes you actually want to win but you still buy a mass of tickets anyway) and the Teddy Bear Rocket Launcher. All the old favourites. But, wait, what was that? Teddy Bear Rocket launcher??? Yes. Yes, my friends, you read that correctly. There is a new stall in the village (well the neighbouring one to be precise) where your child’s teddy gets the opportunity of a lifetime – to become an astronaut. Yes. I know. Have you ever wondered what happened to the five little ducks who went swimming one day, over the hill and far away? Or even how that Mummy duck felt when finally only one little duck came back? It is December the 21st and I am in a room full of strangers (well, almost full and I am with my friend, E, who is awesomeness personified). In this room (almost) full of strangers are a series of trestle tables upon which are laid out a couple of hundred cadavers. No, I am not in some weird CSI nightmare, unless it is an avian massacre episode. Yes, my friends, I am in a room (almost) full of dead birds. In fact I am at a turkey auction. Happy Christmas everyone! Continue reading “Tinsel, Turkeys and Traditions (or a Christmas Story)”
Sometimes you read a book and it plays on your mind, making you question accepted beliefs and existing norms, even questioning where you stand in the grand scheme of life. I have just finished reading Down Among the Women by Fay Weldon, and this has prompted some degree of careful introspection on the state of our society. Bing bong bing bong – bing bong bing bong went the doorbell.
“Hmmm. I hope they’re up T.”
Scraaatch squeak bang as the bolt was drawn across the lock and the door opened.
“What are you doing here? You’re a bit early aren’t you?”
“WHAT?????” was my verbal response whereas WTF??????? was bouncing round my brain…
